Associate Professor Han Lim

Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist — MBBS, PhD, FRACP, FCSANZ, FHRS

Han obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Melbourne and completed his Cardiology training at the Austin Hospital, before undertaking subspecialty training in the area of cardiac electrophysiology and device implantations. He is a recipient of the NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) Medical Postgraduate Scholarship for his PhD in the area of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF). Han is the first Australian cardiologist to be awarded the Parmley Prize from the American College of Cardiology in 2012. He is also a Finalist in the American Heart Association Samuel Levine Young Investigator Award in 2014 and a recipient of the NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Early Career Fellowship.

For his overseas advanced cardiac electrophysiology fellowship, Han trained with Professor Michel Haissaguerre in Bordeaux, France, who pioneered the technique of catheter ablation for AF. Han has extensive experience in the area of catheter ablation for complex arrhythmias, including the latest ablation techniques for AF, supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia, as well as pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantations. He has authored and co-authored 6 book chapters and >100 peer-reviewed journal publications in the area of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiology in major international cardiology journals such as the Journal of American College of Cardiology, Circulation Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, Circulation, Journal of American Heart Association, Europace and Heart Rhythm. He is a regular presenter at national and international Cardiology conferences.

Han holds public appointments at Austin Hospital and Northern Hospital. He leads the research program at Austin Health in the field of cardiac electrophysiology, and is responsible for supervising and training electrophysiology fellows at Austin Health. Han currently serves as the Australian representative for the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society.

He is an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. His research interests are in the area of heart rhythm disorders, particularly atrial fibrillation and stroke, and sudden cardiac death.
